AWEA Wind Resource &
Project Energy Assessment Workshop

September 24 - 25, 2008
Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront Hotel
Portland, OR

View Attendee Roster

Program Chair: Clint Johnson,
Garrad Hassan America, Inc.

Each year, the AWEA Wind Resource and Project Energy Assessment Workshop has evolved with the needs of the wind industry. The first workshop included a sold-out 2-day program focused on current practices in the industry, while the second workshop—which attracted over 320 attendees—examined how well current practices work, how to reduce bias and uncertainty in energy estimates, and emerging tools in the field. The third event, on September 24 - 25, 2008 in Portland, Oregon, tackled unresolved issues from previous workshops and conferences, bringing them to the forefront for in-depth discussion.

NOTE: The workshop included a half-day pre-conference seminar which provided an introduction to wind energy with a concentration on resource assessment—an ideal offering for those new to the wind industry or seeking a basic background in resource assessment issues. Since the topics covered during the actual workshop were presented at a technical level, attending the pre-conference seminar was recommended for those with little or no prior knowledge of resource assessment.

Topics covered:

  • Validating predictions against actual wind farm production
  • The challenges of quantifying historical wind speeds and the impacts of climate change
  • Addressing bias in wind measurements and analysis techniques
  • Use of remote sensing - SODAR and LIDAR
  • Wind flow and wake loss modeling
  • Assessing energy loss factors and power performance through operational data
  • Turbine suitability

Who should attend:

  • Project Developer / Owner
  • Consulting
  • Banking / Financial
  • Utilities
  • Government Agency
  • Academic / Non-Profit
  • Turbine Manufacturer
  • Landowner
