Renewable energy leaders argue that investment in national transmission infrastructure—in a “clean energy superhighway”— would both strengthen the overall reliability of our aging and balkanized electric grid, and will supply the nation with vast, inexhaustible, clean, and cost-effective sources of electricity. The new lines would help tap the nation’s best wind and sun resources, which are often in remote areas that were not taken into consideration when the existing grid was designed.
